Seven Capital Sins

9 08 2008

Some of the mortal sins human commit are listed on the “Seven Deadly/Capital Sins”: Anger, Pride, Greed, Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, and Envy.

According to Fr. Wade Wenezes in his Homily on 16 July 2008 at EWTN daily mass, there are 7 corresponding virtues opposing the 7 deadly sins:

  1. Anger – Meekness
  2. Envy – Virtue of Brotherly Love
  3. Lust – Chastity
  4. Pride – Humility
  5. Gluttony – Virtue of Temperance
  6. Sloth – Diligence
  7. Greed – Generosity

In His death on the Cross, Jesus has paid for us the price of each of these sins. Archbishop Fulten J. Sheen in his book: “The Seven Capital Sins”, corresponded these 7 sins to 7 words (or sentences) of Jesus on the Cross.

  1. Anger – “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
  2. Envy – “This day you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
  3. Lust – “Woman, behold your son… son, behold your mother.”
  4. Pride – “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
  5. Gluttony – “I thirst.”
  6. Sloth – “It is finished.”
  7. Greed – “Father, into Your Hands I commend My Spirit.”
