Some of the mortal sins human commit are listed on the “Seven Deadly/Capital Sins”: Anger, Pride, Greed, Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, and Envy.
According to Fr. Wade Wenezes in his Homily on 16 July 2008 at EWTN daily mass, there are 7 corresponding virtues opposing the 7 deadly sins:
- Anger – Meekness
- Envy – Virtue of Brotherly Love
- Lust – Chastity
- Pride – Humility
- Gluttony – Virtue of Temperance
- Sloth – Diligence
- Greed – Generosity
In His death on the Cross, Jesus has paid for us the price of each of these sins. Archbishop Fulten J. Sheen in his book: “The Seven Capital Sins”, corresponded these 7 sins to 7 words (or sentences) of Jesus on the Cross.
- Anger – “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
- Envy – “This day you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
- Lust – “Woman, behold your son… son, behold your mother.”
- Pride – “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
- Gluttony – “I thirst.”
- Sloth – “It is finished.”
- Greed – “Father, into Your Hands I commend My Spirit.”
